Antigua

I arrived safely in Guatemala yesterday afternoon. We were greeted at the airport and driven to Antigua to check into our hotel. We had some time to walk around town before dinner. We were extremely tired since most of us had gotten up at 4:00 a.m. to catch our flights from Mpls. After dinner, we all pretty muched crashed.

Today was our biking trip. It was quite interesting and beautiful. We rode mountain bikes out of Antigua (which has all cobblestone roads). It was quite bumpy, but the bikes they outfitted us with were all decked out with shocks and the whole works. We went out to rural towns outside of Antigua. We stopped for lunch at a women´s co-op. They made us a traditional Guatemalan dish called papian. It was a chile type sauce that we put over rice with some vegetables and chicken. The women at this co-op make their own textiles they and showed us how they do it. It was quite intricate and fascinating. They did a dance for us and we did some shopping. The money they raise at the co-op is used for educating their children. They mostly use the money for school supplies. After that stop, we headed back to Antigua, up hill! We biked up the biggest hill I have ever biked up in my entire life. No exaggeration. I cried out for my mommy a few times! It was a winding rode that just went on forever. On the positive side, we had some phenomenal views of the small towns below and of the mountains and volcanos all around us. Biking was an amazing way to see some of the outskirts of Antigua. I can see what the draw was for Becky and Venisha when they biked Tuscany. Now we are having some needed down time before dinner. So far, I have just eaten Guatemalan food. I´m not quite sure how I feel about it yet, but I do love the tortillas! I hope all is well back home. I heard you got some snow! Until next time, Kristin

It's finally official!

My trip to Guatemala is still 2 months away, but it suddenly feels more official since I just purchased my plane ticket. I hope it's o.k. that I subscribed all of you who read my Thailand blog. I have some time now on my Christmas vacation, so I'm setting up my blog. This freezing cold, snowy weather makes me dream of the day I land in Guatemala City.

A little background on this trip... I'm doing something different than I ever have before. I'm going with a travel group through a company called "Play it Forward, adventure travel with a moral compass". We will be doing a service project in a community outside of Guatemala City. We'll be helping build a home for a family. We will work on the project for 4 full days and the other 4 days we will be kayaking, hiking and biking. I'm really excited to try something different with my travels. I found out about this company during the Grand Old Day 5 K. They had their booth set up and the title & slogan caught my eye as I ran by. I returned later in the day and was immediately sold on the idea of doing adventure travel while also giving something to the community in which we will be staying. Time to try something new. It will also be nice to have the arrangements ie..accomodations and transportation, all set up for me. That will be a welcome change from my previous travels.

I won't write again until just before I leave, so stay tuned for further updates!

I'll be leaving on February 20th and returning on March 1st.
